CIRCLE
At one time the “biggest log cabin city in the world”
This 162-mile trip starts with the 11-mile-long Steese Expressway from Fairbanks to Fox. From Fox it is another 118 miles to Central or 152
Fairbanks is the junction
for the Parks, Richardson, Steese and Elliot Highways. Parks Highway continues
past Denali National Park to Anchorage and Richardson takes a longer route to Anchorage via Delta Junction.
The international airport in Fairbanks has frequent flights within Alaska and to the lower 48, as well as international flights to and from Japan
and Germany. The airport is

about a 15 minute drive from downtown Fairbanks.
Some roads outside of Fairbanks are gravel or only partially paved, such as the Dalton and Steese Highways.
Gravel road rental cars and
RVs are available from some companies in Fairbanks. Ask if they have a Gravel Road Rate or if it is included. Some RV rental companies have restrictions
on which highways you can take the vehicle on and some
require a certain amount of driving experience.
Downtown is a nice area to stroll around with restaurants and shops.
The Metropolitan Area Commuter System (MACS) Transit Bus System provides public transportation within Fairbanks. The fare for an adult is $1.50 and a day pass is $3.00. Seniors over 60 and children 5 and under ride free. You can get a timetable at the Visitor Center.

In 1896, Circle was the largest mining town on
the Yukon River with a population of 1,200. The early miners the town Circle City because they thought the site was on the Arctic Circle, although it is 50 miles south of the Arctic Circle. Today, Circle has a population of 80. Travelers can still visit the old log cabins from the gold rush.
You can walk to The
Pioneer Cemetery which has headstones dated from the 1800s. To get to the trailhead, walk upriver on the gravel road. The cemetery
is on the left about a ten minute walk up the trail.
